What would you say is the most popular book genre these days? Let’s keep it simple and just stick to the major fiction categories of Romance, Westerns, Horror, Science Fiction/Fantasy and Mysteries. Yes, there is a wide variety of subgenres within these divisions and they can even be mixed together but for me, these are probably the major ones. As a reader, I usually gravitate towards the Science Fiction/Fantasy and Mystery stories the mosts. So as I writer I will probably create my first fiction story within one or both of these genres.

Now, everyone knows that the number one fiction genre is really romance novels. And we all hope to find some romance elements within the stories written in the other genres as well. But what really separates these fiction stories from each other? I have been told by several different writers that there are as many different ways to write fiction as there are writers who create them. There really are no strict rules for writing fiction other than telling a good story to the best of your ability. AND, make sure you use all the grammar tools at your disposal. There really is nothing more irksome to a reading writer than to try and slog through a story with lots of grammatical errors.

This article is not being written to try and convince to create only mystery stories or even just about women detectives. The best writing, I think, comes from someone who creates a story that they would like to read. So, go out there and create your very own Female Detective who is riding around in a space ship battling demons while looking for romance with a cowboy story and let us know when you’re done. You can never have too many mixed-genre stories.
