Helpful Online Sources for Biographers

There are loads of different online sources out there to learn how to write a good, informative biography on just any subject as well as research resources to help you learn about a particular person too. If you don’t have access to the actual person (or nearest living relative) finding newspaper articles featuring the subject may be your only source of information. We have signed up with Newspapers.com as they seem to be the best source of online historical newspapers. DO NOT PAY for the newspaperarchives.com

account it is totally not worth the price of even a month’s worth of research. Of course, Newspapers.com allows you a 7 day FREE Trial for most of their newspapers on the account. It is a great service if you are just researching 1 or 2 people. You just cancel before the end of the 7 days and your credit card will not be charged. Since we are currently researching 15 or 16 people we went ahead and bought the six months’ worth. Granted, they do not have a lot of Florida newspapers nor do they have every single edition published of certain major newspapers but they do have quite a few from all around the U.S. and a fairly decent search engine. The requirement is that the newspapers were scanned into PDF format and converted over to searchable text. Some of the older ones you still have to read through yourself if you have a specific date and city. They tell me that they are slowly adding more each week.

Another great resource for learning about how to write the biography after you have gathered all your research would be books and videos. Personally, I love to watch videos as I’m more of a visual learner. Books, to me, should be reserved for enjoyment but learning new skills can be enjoyable too if the author has done their job right. There are a lot of learning videos available on YouTube and any subject you would wish to learn. For biography writing, we put that phrase into the search engine and came up with about 10 to 15 different ones. You will need to read the descriptions closely as some are about how to teach children to write biographies, others on how to write your own short biography for websites and other applications and still others have nothing to do with how to create biographies at all. We watch a few and thought the following one interesting enough to get you started.
