I hope you have plans to visit the Sunshine State Book Festival online today. There are about 100 different writers participating in the event with 4 or 5 different speakers as well. The organizers have done a tremendous job with the website, authors panels, and recruiting interesting speakers. You can view my page at http://www.sunshinestatebookfestival.com/au_pg3.html#MacFadden They include our video, a short description and our book cover linked to Amazon so that any interested buyers can purchase them. You can find authors by name, by genre, and even by book titles. I have already viewed 10 of the author’s videos. They have all done a great job.

Top Ten Ways to Market Your Book For Free

We may be seeing more and more of these types of events over the next couple of months if not years. Learning some video shooting and editing techniques might be a good skill for us independent authors to learn. They do not have to be professional quality but they do need to be taken seriously. To help my fellow authors below are a few things to keep in mind when creating your own event videos or even commercials.

Tips for Newbies

1. Book event coordinators should have a list of the minimum required standards for the video in regards to time, file size, and video file format.
2. Be creative and add elements from your books into your videos when you can.
3. Make sure you have enough natural light and a quiet place to record – background noise is a pain to get rid of in post-production.
4. Take a couple of practice videos using different cameras to determine which one provides the best looking and sounding videos. There is a difference between your smartphones, web cameras, digital cameras, and camcorders. [FYI: digital pictures generally work best outdoors in natural lighting]
5. Do not be afraid to experiment. You can always do it again if you are not happy with the results.
6. Start early on your projects and plan out what you are going to say and practice that a couple of times to ease your nervousness.
7. Learn at least two different video production software projects to edit your movie. There are several available for free but may have limited capabilities. DO NOT PAY for software until you have gained some experience with the free ones. That way you will only pay for what you really want.
