Featured Character Merry Gentry

Our featured character this month is Merry Gentry, Private Investigator and Fairy Princess. The series is written by one of our favorite authors, Laurel K. Hamilton. She hasn’t released a new book in the series in a couple of years but hopes to begin working on one towards the end of this year. We thought we would re-read the series again since it has been a while. Meredith Gentry was a human fairy princess growing up under the cruel rule of her aunt but went to a regular college and studied a field of biology. She had to leave the fairydom and moved to California and trained to become a private investigator to pay the bills. She specializes in “unusual” cases which in this universe is anyone who is not human. The series begins when the Fairy Princess is invited back to the fairy kingdom, that is “anchored” to a piece of land in the East by the President of the United States some 100 years ago, by her Aunt. That is when the trouble really begins because the Queen’s son wants her dead.

Most of the series centers around Merry’s relationship with the current queen and her trying to survive in that world while occasionally solving a few crimes along the way. It is definitely a “what-if” story mixing fairy magic and modern day society. The author, as with her Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter/Federal Marshall, series has a lot of sex happening as well as solving crimes. Both universes are fun to visit but I wouldn’t want to live in them.

You, as a future published author, should note that the author has a very nice website that is updated regularly and participates on her social media accounts between writing her pages for her books. Of course, she does have help with some of the social media stuff but is on Twitter pretty regularly and posts blog updates for her fans. The website’s theme is changed out almost every year to keep it looking fresh for her fans. As we have stated in a couple of our previous post this writer has trained with professionals in handling firearms and in police procedures so that her characters are more believable. As to the other aspects of her character’s life that are similar in her personal life that is strictly her business. The series has been published in comic books or graphic novels as the adult fans like to call them and has inspired a lot of fan art and fan fiction as well. Read the series and see for yourself.
