March National Month Celebrations

March has always been known for St. Patrick’s Day and the first day of spring. In most schools, March is also when they take Spring Break. Occasionally Easter will fall in March as well. We decided to see what else March is known for and, of course, we visited our handy National Calendar Day website for some information. There is quite a long list of observances for this month but we have picked out our top five for this post.

Irish-American Heritage Month
We had to include this one as we are Scots-Irish on both sides of the family, one of my sons was born on March 17th, although he is mostly Italian with a little bit of Irish and because I love the color green. The Irish-American Heritage Month is proclaimed every year by the President since 1991 to coincide with St. Patrick’s Day. You can visit the website http://irishamericanheritagemonth.com/ to find out more and to read the profiles of some famous Irish-American persons.

National Caffeine Awareness Month
This is not what I thought it was. According to the people at Caffeine Awareness this month is all about getting people to stop drinking coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks. That’s all fine and good for pregnant ladies and the Mormons (sorry Granny) but I like my coffee, I need hot tea some days just to be able to relax and I enjoy a ice cold coke on just about any day in sunny Florida.

National Craft Month
Now this is our kind of month! Of course we do crafts all year long and sell them. My granddaughter and I do them when she visits. But if you need ideas for doing your own crafts by yourself or with the kids you might want to try out Martha Stewarts suggestions on her website: https://www.marthastewart.com/1105764/national-craft-month-projects. You can get ideas on Pinterest, Instagram and your favorite search engine as well. Happy Crafting!

National Women’s History Month
For some reason, us women have to have our very own history page to get acknowledged for all that we do, have done and will do in the future. It wasn’t that long ago that we got the right to vote and we are still fighting the age-old war get getting equal pay for equal work. I applaud those women who just want to stay at home and “take care of the babies and household” and I support the women who want to create a life outside of the home. Hell, I even embrace those women who want to fight for our country. They should be remembered for all that they have accomplished throughout history. National Music in Our Schools Month
Not this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. Even though none of my kids wanted to learn to play an instrument they did enjoy watching the marching band, going to school concerts of their friends and participating in the elementary music class presentations at Christmas. The arts of all kinds should be kept and embellished in our schools. Yes, we need to teach them the 3 R’s as well as history but what else can engage young minds than learning how to play an instrument?!?! Music is all around us and ingrained in our culture, personalities and every single thing that we do. You know music is math, right? That’s right musical notes are just math equations with sound. Our country is severely behind in the math and sciences these days and getting the young ones involved in music may help them later in their school career to get through the more difficult subjects. Till next people!
