Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) supports the state’s criminal justice system in the areas of criminal investigations, forensic laboratory services, and computerized criminal justice information. The bureau is divided into the following divisions: Investigative Division, Georgia Crime Information Center, Division of Forensic Sciences, Medical Examiner’s Office and the Crisis Intervention Team. GBI Investigative Division has Special agents that respond to requests for assistance from local law enforcement officials to investigate major crimes throughout Georgia.Specialized Units within the division include Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit, Commercial Gambling Unit, Financial Investigations Unit, GA Information Sharing Analysis Center, Major Theft Unit, Polygraph Unit, Special Operations Unit and Training Unit. There is a miscellaneous section with the At-Risk Adult Abuse, Bingo Coordinator, Body Recovery Team, Child Abduction Response Team, Child Abuse Specialist, Crisis Intervention Team, Crime Scene Specialist, Document and Benefit Fraud, Forensic Art, Identity Theft, Social Security Fraud and Counter-Terrorism Task Force.”

Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) provides law enforcement agencies throughout the state with round-the-clock access to criminal justice information.”

Division of Forensic Sciences (DOFS) consists of scientists and technicians that collect, analyze, and interpret all aspects of physical evidence for officers, investigators, and District Attorneys throughout the state.”

The Medical Examiner’s Office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation provides complete forensic pathology services to 153 of Georgia’s 159 counties in deaths which qualify as coroner cases under the Georgia Death Investigation Act.”

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) is a dynamic collaboration of professionals committed to people with mental illness and other brain disorders. The CIT program is sponsored by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Mental Health, Development Disabilities, and Addictive Diseases, Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Sheriff’s Association, Inc., and Georgia Public Safety Training Center.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is a state criminal investigative agency with over 770 employees (350 are in the Investigation Division) and an FY16 budget of $89.3 million. The GBI is comprised of three divisions: the State Crime Laboratory, the Georgia Crime Information Center and the Investigative Division. We couldn’t locate any information on the number of female investigators employed by the bureau and the actual requirements, job sheet information, etc. is not available until a position is posted as open. The Training Unit is also responsible for the training of all newly hired GBI Special Agents. The Training Unit provides training to new agents during a 16-week Basic Agent Course. During this 16 week training period, new agents receive over 650 hours of training in a broad range of subjects to include investigative techniques, ethics, interviewing, crime scene processing, firearms, death investigations, drug enforcement, defensive tactics, and emergency vehicle operations. Once new agents complete the 16-week GBI Agent Basic Course, newly sworn special agents complete a lengthy Field Training Agent Program at their assigned office. In addition to providing training for GBI personnel, the Training Unit provides training to other state and local law enforcement agencies.
